Surah Al-Baqarah, Verses 6–20: Those Who Reject Truth

Three responses to the same guidance. The third is the one the Qur'an describes at length, and the one it describes most terrifyingly.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

As we continue our journey through the final revelation, this section presents three distinct responses to the guidance of the Qur'an: the Believers who accept and follow divine guidance, the Disbelievers who knowingly reject the truth, and the Hypocrites who outwardly claim belief while concealing rejection and corruption within themselves.

This section contains a terrifying description of hypocrisy, exposes its inner contradictions, and warns us about its spiritual consequences. Verses 8–10 reveal the reality of those who say "We believe in Allah and the Last Day" yet are not believers — they seek to deceive Allah and the believers, but deceive only themselves. In their hearts is a disease, and Allah allows their disease to increase, with a painful punishment awaiting them because of their persistent lying.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned: "No one who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise." (Sahih Muslim)

Arrogance is especially dangerous because it can prevent a person from recognizing and accepting the truth — even when that truth has become clear.
