Assalāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

Before a new Muslim reads this surah, there is something important to know:

Sūrat ʿAbasa begins with an actual moment in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

A blind Muslim came seeking knowledge while the Prophet ﷺ was speaking to an influential man from Quraysh whom he hoped would accept Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ briefly frowned and turned his attention toward the influential man.

🟨 AND ALLAH REVEALED QURʾĀN ABOUT IT.

That alone makes this an extraordinary surah.

The Qurʾān does not hide the education of the Messenger ﷺ. Revelation teaches him—and through him teaches every preacher, scholar, leader, teacher, and Muslim who will come afterward.

BEFORE YOU READ

Surah: 80

Name: ʿAbasa — عبس

Meaning: He Frowned

Verses: 42

Juzʾ: 30

Revealed: Makkah

Classical authorities regard it as Makkan. A traditional chronology reported through Ibn ʿĀshūr places it around the twenty-fourth surah revealed, after al-Najm and before al-Qadr, although that should be understood as a traditional ordering rather than an exact dated historical calendar.

Its major themes are:

Who deserves our attention,

sincerity before social status,

purification,

the dignity of revelation,

human creation,

food as evidence of Allah's care,

resurrection,

and the terrifying moment when every person becomes occupied with their own fate.

WHY WAS SŪRAT ʿABASA REVEALED?

Here, unlike some surahs we have studied, we possess a particularly clear hadith connected directly to the opening verses.

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها reported that:

“He frowned and turned away” was revealed concerning Ibn Umm Maktūm, the blind man.

He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him to guide him. At that time, the Prophet ﷺ was engaged with an important man from among the polytheists.

The Prophet ﷺ continued directing his attention toward that man.

Then these verses were revealed.

Imām al-Tirmidhī records the narration and calls it ḥasan gharīb; the edition displayed by Sunnah.com also records a later grading of ṣaḥīḥ.

🟨 SO HERE WE REALLY CAN SAY:

WE KNOW THE INCIDENT BEHIND THE OPENING.

WHO WAS IBN UMM MAKTŪM?

The man at the center of this revelation was:

عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُوم

ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm رضي الله عنه

He was blind.

But do not allow the word “blind” to make you think he occupied some insignificant position among the Muslims.

Later, authentic hadith show him serving as one of the muʾadhdhins of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, alongside Bilāl

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim explicitly records that the Prophet ﷺ had Bilāl and Ibn Umm Maktūm as his two callers to prayer.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī likewise records that during Ramaḍān Bilāl would call before dawn and Ibn Umm Maktūm would give the later adhān marking the arrival of dawn.

🟨 SO LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED.

A blind believer approached asking for knowledge.

The powerful people of Makkah appeared more strategically important.

BUT ALLAH IMMORTALIZED THE SINCERE SEEKER IN THE QURʾĀN.

The Quraysh elite disappeared into history.

Ibn Umm Maktūm's encounter is still being recited more than fourteen centuries later.

WHAT EXACTLY WAS THE PROPHET ﷺ DOING?

This point matters.

The Prophet ﷺ was not rejecting Ibn Umm Maktūm because he hated him or because blindness made him worthless.

HE WAS PERFORMING DAʿWAH.

He hoped that convincing an influential leader of Quraysh might open a door for many others to Islam.

From a human strategic perspective, that makes sense.

But revelation establishes a higher standard:

🟨 DO NOT MEASURE THE VALUE OF A SOUL BY ITS SOCIAL POWER.

The person already approaching Allah sincerely may be more deserving of your attention than the powerful person who thinks he needs nothing.

The Qurʾān asks:

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ

“And what could make you know? Perhaps he might become purified.”

That word again:

PURIFICATION.

🟨 ISLAM IS NOT MERELY RECRUITMENT.

IT IS PURIFICATION OF HUMAN BEINGS.

SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL ABOUT THE CORRECTION

The surah initially speaks about the Prophet ﷺ in the third person:

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

“He frowned and turned away.”

Only afterward does the address turn directly toward him.

Some classical commentators saw tenderness in this rhetorical form: the correction comes, but the Prophet ﷺ is not immediately confronted with “you frowned” at the opening.

Whatever rhetorical analysis one adopts, the essential lesson remains:

MUHAMMAD ﷺ IS THE MESSENGER.

ALLAH IS THE TEACHER.

Even the Messenger ﷺ is guided by revelation.

That is one reason this episode is powerful evidence for the integrity of the Qurʾānic record: the text preserves a correction rather than constructing a flattering biography.

THEN THE SURAH CHANGES DIRECTION

After the incident with Ibn Umm Maktūm, Allah says:

كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

No indeed! This is a reminder.

Then the Qurʾān is described as being associated with honored, exalted, purified pages, carried by noble and righteous scribes.

The surah moves from:

Who deserves to hear revelation?

to:

How exalted revelation itself is.

Then suddenly:

Perish the human being! How ungrateful he is!

And Allah asks the human being to remember:

Where did you come from?

What did Allah create you from?

Who determined your development?

Who made the path possible for you?

Who causes you to die?

Who will resurrect you?

🟨 HUMAN ARROGANCE LOOKS VERY STRANGE AFTER REMEMBERING HUMAN ORIGINS.

THEN ALLAH TELLS YOU TO LOOK AT YOUR FOOD

One of my favorite movements in this surah begins:

فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ

“Let the human being look at his food.”

Think about that.

You are discussing resurrection.

🟨 ALLAH SAYS: LOOK AT BREAKFAST.

Rain fell.

The ground split.

Grain grew.

Grapes.

Vegetables.

Olives.

Dates.

Dense gardens.

Fruit.

Pasture.

The food sitting in front of you is connected to an entire system you did not create.

THE ONE WHO CREATES LIFE FROM SOIL CAN RESURRECT HUMAN BEINGS FROM THE EARTH.

THEN COMES THE ṢĀKKHAH

The final section begins:

فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ

“Then when the Deafening Blast comes…”

And something astonishing happens.

A person flees from:

their brother,

their mother,

their father,

their spouse,

and their children.

Why?

“Every person that Day will have a matter sufficient to occupy them completely.”

There is an authentic Prophetic hadith that directly uses this verse.

ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها asked about humanity being resurrected barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised. She wondered about people seeing one another.

The Prophet ﷺ answered with the words of this surah:

Every person that Day will have enough to make them careless of anyone else.

That report is graded ṣaḥīḥ in Sunan al-Nasāʾī.

🟨 THAT MAKES VERSE 37 ONE OF THE SURAH'S ESPECIALLY VIVID HADITH CONNECTIONS.

THE MAP OF SŪRAT ʿABASA

1–10 — The blind seeker and the Quraysh elite

11–16 — The dignity and purity of revelation

17–23 — Human creation, death, and resurrection

24–32 — Look at your food

33–37 — The Deafening Blast and families fleeing one another

38–42 — Two kinds of faces on the Last Day

And now that we understand the doorway—

🟨 WE ENTER THE SURAH.

1

ʿAbasa wa tawallā

He frowned and turned away,

2

An jāʾahu l-aʿmā

because the blind man came to him.

3

Wa mā yudrīka laʿallahu yazzakkā

And what could make you know? Perhaps he might become purified,

4

Aw yadhdhakkaru fa-tanfaʿahu dh-dhikrā

or take heed, so that the reminder would benefit him.

5

Ammā mani staghnā

But as for the one who considers himself self-sufficient,

6

Fa-anta lahu taṣaddā

you give him your attention,

7

Wa mā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā

although you are not responsible if he refuses purification.

8

Wa ammā man jāʾaka yasʿā

But as for the one who came to you striving eagerly,

9

Wa huwa yakhshā

while standing in reverential fear,

10

Fa-anta ʿanhu talahhā

you became occupied away from him.

11

Kallā innahā tadhkirah

No indeed! Surely this is a reminder.

12

Fa-man shāʾa dhakarah

So whoever wills may remember it.

13

Fī ṣuḥufin mukarramah

It is in honored pages,

14

Marfūʿatin muṭahharah

exalted and purified,

15

Bi-aydī safarah

in the hands of scribes,

16

Kirāmin bararah

noble and righteous.

17

Qutila l-insānu mā akfarah

Perish the human being! How terribly ungrateful he is!

18

Min ayyi shayʾin khalaqah

From what did Allah create him?

19

Min nuṭfatin khalaqahu fa-qaddarah

From a drop He created him and determined his development.

20

Thumma s-sabīla yassarah

Then He made the way easy for him.

21

Thumma amātahu fa-aqbarah

Then He caused him to die and provided him a grave.

22

Thumma idhā shāʾa ansharah

Then, whenever He wills, He will raise him again.

23

Kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah

No indeed! The human being has not yet fulfilled what Allah commanded him.

24

Fal-yanẓuri l-insānu ilā ṭaʿāmih

So let the human being look carefully at his food:

25

Annā ṣababnā l-māʾa ṣabbā

We poured down water abundantly,

26

Thumma shaqaqnā l-arḍa shaqqā

then split the earth open,

27

Fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabbā

and caused grain to grow within it,

28

Wa ʿinaban wa qaḍbā

along with grapes and fresh vegetation,

29

Wa zaytūnan wa nakhlā

olives and date palms,

30

Wa ḥadāʾiqa ghulbā

and thick, flourishing gardens,

31

Wa fākihatan wa abbā

and fruits and pasture,

32

Matāʿan lakum wa li-anʿāmikum

as provision for you and your livestock.

33

Fa-idhā jāʾati ṣ-ṣākhkhah

Then when the Deafening Blast comes—

34

Yawma yafirru l-marʾu min akhīh

the Day a person will flee from his own brother,

35

Wa ummihi wa abīh

and from his mother and his father,

36

Wa ṣāḥibatihi wa banīh

and from his spouse and his children.

37

Li-kulli mriʾin minhum yawmaʾidhin shaʾnun yughnīh

🟨 Every person that Day will have enough concern of their own to occupy them completely.

38

Wujūhun yawmaʾidhin musfirah

Some faces that Day will be radiant,

39

Ḍāḥikatun mustabshirah

laughing and rejoicing at good news.

40

Wa wujūhun yawmaʾidhin ʿalayhā ghabarah

And other faces that Day will be covered with dust,

41

Tarhaquhā qatarah

overwhelmed by darkness.

42

Ulāʾika humu l-kafaratu l-fajarah

Those are the disbelieving, defiantly sinful ones.

And Allah knows best.

And this surah gives you a very different conclusion from al-Nabaʾ or al-Nāziʿāt.

It begins with a man whom society might overlook because he is blind, while powerful men receive attention.

🟨 ALLAH REVERSES THAT MEASUREMENT.

Then near the end, every worldly relationship and status disappears completely—

brother,

mother,

father,

spouse,

children—

and all that remains is the human being standing before Allah.

So the question waiting for your conclusion could be:

🟨 WHO DO YOU SEE WHEN YOU LOOK AT A HUMAN BEING?

Do you see wealth, beauty, disability, popularity, power, and usefulness?

Or do you see a heart that may be running toward Allah?

THAT COULD MAKE THE ENDING TO SŪRAT ʿABASA EXCEPTIONALLY POWERFUL.

And with that, we conclude Sūrat ʿAbasa.

In shāʾ Allāh, I am going to conclude with the AI video—where we talk about AI, the Qurʾān, and the responsibility of helping AI understand and represent the Book of Allah correctly.

Watch "Abasa 3" on YouTube

And we will also conclude with Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and its translation—the opening of the Qurʾān, the surah we recite again and again in every ṣalāh.

May Allah bless me and bless you, and may Allah give us the opportunity to continue reciting His Book in Arabic and in English, especially for those of us who are not Arabs, so that we can understand the message of our Lord—not merely pronounce His words.

May Allah make the Qurʾān light for our hearts, guidance for our lives, and a means of drawing closer to Him.

SŪRAT ʿABASA IS COMPLETE.

And now—

AI, THE QURʾĀN, AND SŪRAT AL-FĀTIḤAH.

In shāʾ Allāh, I will see you in the next surah.

Wa-s-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.
