THE REDESIGN OF THE HOUSE OF WISDOM
Islamic psychology The Difficulty of Managing Desires: An Islamic Perspective
Human beings are inherently wired with desires—both a gift and a trial from the Creator. Desires are a defining feature of our existence, shaping our actions and decision
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Human beings are inherently wired with desires—both a gift and a trial from the Creator. Desires are a defining feature of our existence, shaping our actions and decisions. In Islam, desires (Shahawat) are neither inherently evil nor entirely virtuous; they are tools for spiritual growth and a test of our willpower and sincerity. Managing these desires requires balance, wisdom, and a deep connection with Allah. The struggle is universal, yet personal, and each individual’s journey to manage their desires is unique.
The Nature of Desires: A Test and a Trust
The Quran beautifully acknowledges human desires in Surah Al-Imran (3:14):
"Beautified for mankind is the love of desires—of women, children, heaped-up treasures of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cultivated land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return."
Desires, when fulfilled within permissible boundaries, are blessings. When unchecked or misused, they lead to spiritual decay.
Islam teaches that desires are a part of the Nafs (self), which operates in three states:
- Nafs al-Ammarah (The Commanding Self): This is the base self, which inclines towards evil and seeks to gratify desires heedlessly.
- Nafs al-Lawwama (The Reproachful Self): This state represents a soul that is aware of its shortcomings, struggling against sinful desires while feeling guilt and remorse.
- Nafs al-Mutma’innah (The Tranquil Self): The purified soul, which has aligned its desires with the pleasure of Allah.
Watch: "An Islamic Model of the Soul" on YouTube.
The Role of Repentance in Managing Desires
The beauty of Islam lies in its emphasis on repentance. No matter how overwhelming desires become or how many times one falls into sin, the door to repentance remains open. Allah promises in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53): "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every son of Adam is a sinner, but the best of sinners are those who repent." (Tirmidhi) This Hadith highlights that managing desires is not about achieving perfection but about continuously striving, falling, repenting, and standing up again.
Practical Steps to Managing Desires in Islam
- Fasting: The Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended fasting as a shield against unchecked desires, especially for those unable to marry. He said: "O young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes and preserves chastity. But those who cannot should fast, for it is a means of controlling sexual desire." (Sahih Bukhari)
- Lowering the Gaze: Surah An-Nur (24:30-31) instructs both men and women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. Avoiding environments or content that triggers desires is a practical application of this principle.
- Seeking Knowledge: Knowledge about the consequences of desires and the rewards of self-control strengthens willpower. Imam Al-Ghazali emphasized the importance of understanding the psychology of desires to combat them effectively.
- Companionship: Surrounding oneself with pious friends and mentors can significantly impact one’s ability to manage desires. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The example of a good companion and a bad one is that of a perfume seller and a blacksmith..." (Sahih Bukhari)
- Dhikr and Prayer: The remembrance of Allah purifies the heart and strengthens the soul. Regular prayer, especially Tahajjud, and engaging in Dhikr fortify the individual against temptations.
Desires as a Taste of Paradise
One of the profound aspects of desires is how they offer a glimpse of the joy and beauty of Paradise. For instance, the physical pleasure experienced in marital relations is described in Islam as a preview of the eternal bliss awaiting the righteous. This understanding shifts the perspective on desires—they are not only trials but also reminders of Allah’s generosity and the ultimate reward for self-discipline.
The Role of Teachers and Mentors
In Islam, the guidance of scholars and spiritual mentors is invaluable. Teachers who embody knowledge and character can help individuals navigate their struggles with desires. Imam Al-Ghazali, in his works, emphasized the importance of companionship with those who inspire one to be closer to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was a mentor to his companions, guiding them with wisdom and compassion.
The Psychological Perspective
Watch "Dr. Rasjid Skinner: What is Islamic Psychology?" on YouTube
Modern Islamic psychology also offers insights into managing desires. Resources like Khalil Center and the Islamic Psychology Network provide practical tools rooted in Islamic teachings to address struggles with desires, mental health, and spirituality.
A Message of Hope
For those struggling with their desires, Islam offers endless hope. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would replace you with a people who would sin and seek forgiveness, and He would forgive them." (Sahih Muslim) This Hadith highlights that the act of repentance is beloved to Allah and that He created us to be fallible yet resilient.
Conclusion: A Journey of Balance
Managing desires is a lifelong journey of balance, self-awareness, and reliance on Allah. While desires can lead to spiritual ruin, they can also elevate the soul when managed within the framework of Islam. The key is to strive for self-improvement, seek forgiveness, and remain connected to Allah through prayer, knowledge, and community.
Every individual’s journey is unique, but the ultimate goal is universal: to align one’s desires with the pleasure of Allah and achieve tranquility in both this world and the Hereafter. Let this be a reminder to never despair, for Allah’s mercy encompasses all.
In conclusion
The Importance of Choosing Your Path Wisely
It is crucial to understand that there are two paths available for those seeking psychological and emotional well-being. Many people find comfort in the traditional clinical route, which offers therapy, counseling, and even video resources. If this is what feels most appropriate and accessible for you, then by all means, use these resources. This is your journey, and finding the right support is essential.
However, there is a deeper, more illuminated path—one rooted in the teachings of Islam and the guidance of spiritual masters. The Blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) trained his companions, illuminating their hearts with light that came from Allah. This light has continued to pass down through generations, carried by those who were guided and have become guides themselves. Being in the company of such illuminated people, or even their students, can profoundly transform your life. The light they carry transcends space and time, reaching hearts that are prepared to receive it.
The Role of Teachers and Guides
For example, the person writing this article has a teacher who serves as both a psychological and spiritual guide. My teacher, Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi, is a source of light and wisdom, himself connected to a lineage of guidance that traces back to the Blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). You can read about him and his remarkable legacy here:

Google their names, find their schools, and discover the wealth of wisdom they offer. Everyone’s journey is unique, and these individuals can provide diverse guidance to help you along the way.
A Warning: Do Not Trust Yourself Alone
The worst mistake you can make is thinking you can navigate life on your own, relying solely on your judgment while ignoring the fact that everyone is assigned a devil to mislead them. The Quran and Hadith remind us repeatedly about the necessity of seeking counsel and surrounding ourselves with righteous people.
Your journey will be challenging, but you don’t have to face it alone. Seek out those who can guide you, whether through professional therapy or spiritual mentorship. Do not leave yourself to your own devices, for that path leads only to destruction. May Allah guide you, protect you, and bring you to the light. Good luck on your journey.
You Are Pure and Beautiful: A Reflection of Your True Self
If you take a moment to look deeply at yourself, you will find that you are pure and beautiful. Your soul is inherently pure, created by Allah in the most perfect form. You are only out of place when you are out of balance—when life’s challenges and trials tilt your equilibrium. If you are angry, it is because something has disrupted you. But remember, anger is a dangerous state, for anyone who gives in to anger becomes one with the devil, as the teachings of Islam remind us.
This realization is among the most difficult lessons in Islam: to recognize anger, to conquer it, and to return to balance. The path to mastering anger is challenging, but it is also transformative. Sitting with many teachers and learning from different sources is essential, but I have found my own specialty—helping others with their anger. Cooling you down after you have been heated is something I excel at. Perhaps it’s because I understand this struggle all too well.
I am still a student on this path, a seeker of knowledge and refinement under my blessed teacher. While I cannot yet fully discuss this journey, I am preparing for what I call my "spiritual boot camp," where I will be tested, trained, and, insha’Allah, qualified to teach and serve at a higher level. Until then, I practice daily, heating myself up and cooling myself down, navigating my own flaws and imperfections. I ask you not to contact me to cool you down; I am already carrying enough heat for myself. But I leave you with my video—raw, real, and unpolished—as an offering of what I do best.
Human Beauty: The Hidden Truth
Understand this: there is nothing evil about you. As a human being, you are inherently beautiful. You may be shy, insecure, or burdened with struggles, but these do not define you. They are merely part of your journey. Your soul is a reflection of divine beauty. All I ask is that you extend this same courtesy to others. Treat them as you wish to be treated. Yet, be cautious, for many people suffer from internal diseases—anger, jealousy, arrogance, and despair. Protect your heart from their negativity while striving to uplift those who can be uplifted.
This is why I rarely speak to people and avoid meeting too many. It is not out of arrogance but rather an awareness of the diseases within myself and others. If I have spoken with you or met you, know that you are special. If not, then your journey is your own, and it is your responsibility to work on your own diseases, flaws, and problems.
The Key to Life: Repentance and Presence
Live in the present. Do not dwell in the past, for the past is a shadow that holds no power over you unless you let it. Repent often, for repentance is the door to purification. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that those who repent are loved by Allah more than those who do not sin. Repentance is a gift that connects you to your Creator, a bridge that repairs the cracks in your soul.
Be with the truthful. Surround yourself with those who carry light, who strive for goodness, and who walk the path of sincerity. In their presence, you will find safety, guidance, and blessings.
A Message of Hope
You are not alone. You are on a journey of purification and growth, and as long as you are striving, you are succeeding. May Allah bless you, protect you, and guide you to His light.
I leave you with my video, a simple gift to help you navigate the heat of anger and find the cooling presence of balance. Thank you for being here, and may your journey bring you closer to the One who created you pure and beautiful.

I am working to be a man of the Lord, but I am still a student and still struggling, so I cannot give you any religious advice. I’ve given you a lot of information, but I am putting my video here to hold myself accountable. We are all either helping people or destroying people. What is it that you’re doing? What is your purpose in connection to your family and your friends?
I’m going to show this to my family and friends, and hopefully, they will agree with me. That’s what I do for them—I deal in the anger department, cooling and heating, and expansion. This is something you physically have to experience with someone and with teachers. But I am not a teacher; I am a student, and this is submitted to my teachers as homework.
I will be meeting with people and doing reports on myself and my family in terms of perfecting ourselves, perfecting our character, being better people, and coming closer to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a difficult, difficult thing to do. The Qur'an says, "Be in the company of the truthful and the righteous." Even if you’re not truthful or righteous, at least be connected to them, love them, and look forward to instruction from them.
This is being submitted to my teachers—all the teachers included here. This is being sent to them. I always send my homework to my teachers. They always look at it, and I get feedback. That’s why I suggest the same for you. I am not a scholar and will not be giving you religious advice. Please don’t seek me out for any learning. I’m still a student, but my skill set is different, as you can tell in the video.
Anyway, thank you, and may Allah bless you, forgive you, and make this journey easy for you.
