Texas 2026 — and the Road Beyond

Back to Texas

Election: November 3, 2026. Research checked: October 8, 2026.

THE OFFICE AND ITS LIMITS

The Texas Department of Agriculture administers regulatory, marketing, rural-development and nutrition programs. Its official directory identifies responsibilities involving pesticides, plant and seed quality, produce safety, agricultural hemp, weights and measures, grants and rural health. Its nutrition work includes school and other food programs subject to state and federal requirements.

The commissioner does not alone regulate every ingredient, set national trade rules, control immigration, approve every power line or determine all groundwater policy. Distinguish an administrative action from a proposal requiring legislative, federal or other-agency cooperation. Food-safety promises need defined standards, credible evidence, costs and enforceable mechanisms.

The August 28 certification lists these three nominees. Sid Miller is not one of the certified printed choices in this contest. The statewide write-in certification contains no Agriculture Commissioner candidate. Campaign filing or earlier-primary participation does not establish current ballot status.

NATE SHEETS

Republican — printed ballot. Sheets' campaign biography describes Navy Reserve service, building a honey business and ranching. He proposes cleaner food and school meals, trade promotion, rural processing jobs, agricultural biosecurity and legislation requiring employment verification. Business rankings, product-quality claims and predicted health benefits remain attributed campaign claims until supported by independent records and evidence.

Questions: Which school-meal standards would change, at what cost and with which federal approvals? What independent testing would support your food-quality claims? What rural-processing jobs and farm-income outcomes would you target? How would employment-verification proposals address legal work authorization, labor availability and agricultural costs?

CLAYTON TUCKER

Democratic — printed ballot. Tucker's campaign focuses on food and farm affordability, equipment right to repair, water protection and restrictions on data centers. His issue index also proposes hemp protections, pest-control responses, action against monopolies, regenerative practices and changes to chemicals used in farming and food. Each concern needs evidence and an office-specific delivery route; campaign predictions of damage and health effects are not verified findings in this report.

Campaign · Detailed issue index

Questions: Which right-to-repair provisions would you advocate, and what can the department implement directly? What evidence and legal authority would support a data-center restriction? How would chemical changes protect health while preserving viable farm production? Which antitrust proposals require the Attorney General, federal agencies or legislation?

AUSTIN R. KELLY

Libertarian — printed ballot. Kelly describes himself as an ecologist with a doctorate and founder of an ecological consultancy. His platform calls for field-tested water conservation, property rights, reduced farm regulation, fewer barriers to selling agricultural products and efficient use of the department's budget. These descriptions establish his campaign's approach; professional credentials, project outcomes and the fiscal effects of proposed cuts still need independent record review.

Questions: Which water practices have demonstrated savings, on which farms and at what cost? Which regulations would you repeal and what protections would remain? What nutrition and inspection service levels would survive spending reductions? How would you disclose consultancy interests and evaluate programs through independent evidence?

FINANCE AND THE NEXT EVIDENCE LAYER

The July Texas Ethics Commission reports are summarized below; newer reports and a full reconciliation remain pending. Use identical reporting periods and amended filings; distinguish contributions, spending, loans and cash on hand. Missing filings mean unknown, not zero. This project's low-funded threshold is under $100,000 in reported contributions in the same identified period. The verified full-period classifications appear below; all eligible campaigns remain included.

Further assessment needs employment and professional records, conflicts, proposed budgets, nutrition and inspection baselines, and evidence for water, food and pest-control interventions. Campaign biographies are attributed starting points, not complete independent investigations.

DATED CAMPAIGN-FINANCE SNAPSHOT

Checked October 8, 2026; July semiannual reports due July 15, covering periods ending June 30. These are reported figures from the Texas Ethics Commission July totals, cross-checkable through the official totals index and July balance list. They are an identified historical snapshot, not current October balances. Newer pre-election filings, amendments, itemized donors and other committees remain to be reviewed.

The June 30 contribution-maintenance balances and outstanding loans share a measurement date. Contribution and spending totals cover the different start dates shown: compare flows only between rows with identical periods. Do not treat a shorter-period total as a full first-half-year total or rank campaigns across unequal windows. Contributions can include noncash support; balances are not net wealth and loans are not donations. The reported total lines are used without adding the small-item subtotal a second time.

Low-funded definition: less than $100,000 in reported contributions for January 1–June 30, 2026. The complete-period rows meeting that disclosed threshold here are Austin R. Kelly. Rows with later starts remain unclassified until preceding reports are reconciled; unmatched filings mean unknown, not zero. A zero shown above is an explicit reported line for that period, not a finding that the campaign did nothing or never raised funds. Funding does not determine inclusion, seriousness, eligibility or assessment score.

THREE VOICES AND PROVISIONAL REPORT CARD

AI research / provisional view: this first sourced pass, with all three unscored. California's framework examines experience, accountability, education, affordability, economic opportunity, civil rights and religious freedom for everyone, environment, practical powers and measurable commitments. Commitment scoring uses up to two points each for action, mechanism, authority, target and deadline. A /90 total needs adequate comparable evidence across all categories.

Voter response: Omar and readers can supply their own assessments. Candidate response / self-assessment: each campaign can supply corrections, documents and an office-specific self-assessment. No direct response to this report, voter tally, Omar score or endorsement is claimed. Forecasts are separate from assessment scores.

Common request: Give three priorities with legal power, implementation mechanism, cost and funding, target, deadline and a public performance record.
