Two smiling men from the Omar family stand together wearing white turbans, one in a blue-green shirt and the elder in a brown jacket.

Every family has a story, but someone must take responsibility for preserving it. In this article, I begin connecting my father’s legacy and the stories passed down through my family with the wider history of faith, resilience, and leadership. The rise of the Mamluks becomes a starting point for reflecting on how people can overcome circumstances that seem to define their future. What do we inherit from those who came before us—and what will we do with that inheritance?

This journey takes us through Egypt, the spiritual legacy of its scholars and saints, and a remarkable family account my uncle shared about my grandfather and his books. It also introduces my hope to bring these stories to the screen, honoring lives and contributions that deserve to be remembered. The rise of the Omar family begins with preserving its memory and carrying its values forward. I invite you to read, reflect, and join me as the fuller story unfolds.
