The Lesson of Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani

There is a well-known teaching attributed to Shaykh ʿAbdul Qādir al-Jīlānī that illustrates this distinction.

“We want our teacher back.”

“We are receiving information, but we are not being illuminated.”

The Most Dangerous Lie

The worst thing that can happen is not failure.

“Overcoming yourself is easy.”

Those who trivialize it are not merciful —
they are negligent.

The Reset Button: Tawbah

Tawbah.

Tawbah is not shame.

2. The Nafs Has Stages (Not Achievements)

You do not “unlock” these.
You pass through them — often painfully.

Nafs al-Ammara

The commanding ego

Lust, pride, jealousy, self-justification

Endless cravings

Religious activity does not cure it

Nafs al-Lawwama

Self-reproach

Shame after sin

The conscience wakes up

Repentance begins

Nafs al-Mulhama

Inspiration

Seeing your own dirt clearly

Distinguishing truth from falsehood

This does not mean you are safe

Nafs al-Mutma’inna

Tranquility

Contentment with Allah’s will

Gratitude in honor and humiliation

This is not self-declared

Reading this does not move you an inch.

3. The Greatest Battle Is Internal

The struggle against the nafs is the greatest struggle.

It lasts until the last breath.

Anyone who says it is easy is lying — to you or to themselves.

Understanding this does not make it easier.

4. The Nafs Is Not Killed — It Is Trained

You cannot kill it while alive.

You can only discipline it.

This requires:

Supervision

Correction

Limits

Restraint

Trying to do this alone usually strengthens the ego instead.

5. The Two Choices (This Is the Core)

You have only two options:

Walk behind the nafs
Let desire, fear, pride, and confidence lead.

Ride the nafs with the reins of remembrance (dhikr)
Regulate it. Restrain it. Correct it.

Most people think they are riding when they are walking behind.

This distinction is not intellectual — it is lived.

6. Knowledge Is the Map — Not the Travel

Maps do not move you.

Knowing the destination does not carry you.

The burden of travel is unavoidable.

Those who refuse guides get lost with perfect maps.

7. Why a Guide Is Necessary

This is a spiritual GPS, not a theory.

A guide tells you:

When to stop

When to slow down

When you are about to break

When you are lying to yourself

Depending on a guide is not weakness.
It is realism.

8. Why Some Arrive Quickly — And Others Never Do

Not intelligence.
Not sincerity.
Not effort.

But willingness to:

Eat what is prescribed

Drink what is given

Follow without negotiation

Accompany consistently

Accept correction

Some resist for fifty years.
Some surrender in weeks.

9. The Most Dangerous Lie

“Overcoming yourself is easy.”

This destroys people.

The struggle is constant.
Quiet.
Unforgiving.
And absolutely real.

10. The Mercy That Never Closes: Tawbah

Tawbah is a reset button.

Failure does not disqualify you.

Turn back — always.

Allah does not just forgive.

As long as you return:

Forgiveness does not stop

Love does not stop

Find the hospital

Find the doctors

Find how they certify one another
