The Obama Foundation is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2014, whose mission is “to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world”.

It aims to build an “active democratic culture” — equipping individuals and communities to be leaders in their own settings.

The Foundation oversees the development of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, and carries on programs such as My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (originally launched during his presidency) and scholarship initiatives via the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.

How It Operates / Key Programs

My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK): focuses on youth empowerment, mentorship, and reducing violence through interventions at key life milestones.

Presidential Center: The Barack Obama Presidential Center is a large campus (museum, library, community/athletic space) being built in Jackson Park, Chicago, on about 19.3 acres. It is planned to open in spring 2026.

It intends to include a fully digitized presidential library, with collaboration with NARA (the US National Archives) for archival preservation.

Financials & Transparency:

According to their “How We Work” report, in 2022 they had 160,697 donors, with 57,165 giving that year, across 148 countries.

Site & Environmental Concerns: The choice of Jackson Park led to pushback: environmental groups and local residents criticized the cutting of mature trees, impact on migratory birds, and use of public parkland.

Gentrification & Displacement Fears: Local voices warn the Center’s construction and its redevelopment pressures could raise property taxes, displace long-term residents, and change neighborhood culture.

Legal & Budget Overruns: Lawsuits have arisen over allegedly discriminatory contracting practices in the construction phase (e.g. subcontractor filing suit against structural firms) and criticisms over delays, cost escalations, and procurement transparency.

Perception and Legacy Tension: Some analysts regard Obama’s legacy as “fragile” in areas like immigration and refugee policy—i.e. that many aspirations were only partially realized.

Today, we are extending an open hand through the Malcolm X Foundation Initiative, which we will develop in partnership with the House of Wisdom and with inspiration drawn from Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream. The mission: to establish a department dedicated to the advancement, unity, and prosperity of Black people — spiritually, economically, and intellectually — and to make sure no generation of Black youth ever grows up without vision, faith, and opportunity.

If the world is to be saved, it will not be through rivalry, but through teamwork — through people who are willing to combine truth with compassion, power with humility, and wisdom with action.

We invite the Obama Foundation to join us not with words, but with tangible support.
