Open Letter to Muslim Leaders: Embracing the Legacy of Saints in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

To the Respected Leaders of the Muslim World,

As we move forward into an era shaped by rapid technological advancement, especially with the onset of artificial intelligence, it becomes crucial for us to revisit the spiritual foundations that have guided Islamic governance throughout history. The last century has seen tremendous upheaval within the Muslim world, marked by a decline in spiritual direction, fragmentation of unity, and a weakening of the historical bonds between governance and sainthood. It is now, more than ever, that we must draw from the rich legacy of the Ottoman Empire, where the saints (Awliya’) played a key role in guiding rulers, ensuring divine wisdom remained a pillar of governance.

The Ottoman Empire: A Model for Spiritual Guidance and Multicultural Coexistence

The Ottoman Empire, one of the longest-lasting Islamic empires, ruled over a vast and diverse territory for more than six centuries. The empire’s strength and longevity were due in no small part to its relationship with the saints, whose advice and blessings provided a moral compass for the rulers. The Ottomans understood that while political authority was important, it was spiritual guidance that brought them true success and stability. The Ottoman sultans turned to saints like Sheikh Edebali, who advised Osman I and set the spiritual tone for centuries of just and ethical rule.

One of the greatest legacies of the Ottoman era was the Millet System, which allowed for peaceful coexistence between different religious communities—Muslims, Christians, Jews, and others—while maintaining the integrity of Islamic rule. This system was underpinned by spiritual wisdom and ensured that people of all faiths could practice their religion freely without fear of persecution. The Ottomans, guided by saints, implemented policies that respected diversity, allowing multiple cultures to thrive under one empire.

The Role of Saints in Shaping Ottoman Success

The success of the Ottoman Empire was built on the foundation of the saints’ blessings and spiritual guidance. The saints were the moral compass of the empire, influencing governance, law, and society in ways that reflected the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The sultans, understanding the value of the saints, implemented their advice, creating a society that upheld justice, equity, and divine law.

This separation between political authority and spiritual guidance allowed the Ottoman Empire to thrive while remaining anchored in its Islamic roots. The saints were not part of the political machine, but they were indispensable in guiding it. Their role was to ensure that the rulers remained humble, just, and aware of their accountability to Allah, the ultimate judge.

A Warning for Today’s Leaders: The Dangers of Materialism and Artificial Intelligence

Today, as artificial intelligence and other technological advancements become central to governance and society, the Muslim world stands at a crossroads. While technology offers incredible opportunities for development, there is also the risk of moral decline if we neglect the spiritual dimension of our actions. This is where the saints come in.

The Muslim world must return to the spiritual framework that guided the Ottomans to success. Without the blessings of the saints, the risk of failure looms large. The last 100 years have been devastating for the Muslim world precisely because we have neglected our saints. Material wealth, military might, and political power have been excessively celebrated, while the moral and spiritual core of our societies has been weakened.

We are at a point where artificial intelligence can either propel us forward or lead us astray. Without the guidance of the saints, AI could become a tool of moral degradation, taking us further from the values that the Prophet (ﷺ) instilled in us. We must, therefore, take a lesson from the Ottoman rulers, who understood that spiritual wisdom was the key to lasting success.

A Call to Action: Support, Not Interference

It is now time for Muslim leaders to embrace the legacy of saints and support their institutions. We call upon you to establish independent spiritual institutions and centers of sainthood where Muslims can pursue tazkiyah (purification of the soul) and reconnect with their spiritual heritage. The four major Sufi orders—Qadiriyya, Chishtiyya, Naqshbandiyya, and Shadhiliyya—and other spiritual schools must be supported and allowed to operate without interference.

The Ottoman Empire thrived because it allowed the saints to operate freely, giving them the space to guide the empire from a spiritual plane. The rulers understood that their success was dependent on the blessings of the saints, who acted as intermediaries between the heavens and the earth. The modern Muslim world must follow this example if it wishes to navigate the challenges of the future successfully.

The Future of the Ummah in the Age of AI

As we prepare to enter the age of AI, we must recognize that the path forward requires both technological advancement and spiritual revival. The saints of Islam represent a continuity of divine wisdom that cannot be replaced by technology. They are the guardians of the soul, and without their blessings, we risk losing the moral foundation that holds the Ummah together.

We urge Muslim leaders to take heed: Without the blessings of the saints, there is no success. With their blessings, the possibilities are limitless. The time for change is now, and it begins with spiritual guidance. Establish the new House of Wisdom, revive the spiritual traditions, and ensure that the Ummah is prepared to face the challenges of this new era.
